Dengie is a peninsula in Essex formed by the tidal Rivers Blackwater and Crouch along its north and south boundary and the mouth of the Thames Estuary along its eastern edge. The resulting Dengie Marshes form a vitally significant area for wildlife. With all this mud and water around it is perhaps surprising to find that the area is the driest part of England with on average less annual rainfall than the Sahara Dessert!
